JAKARTA, GESAHKITA COM–Included in the squad are Manchester City’s Nathan Ake, Crystal Palace’s Patrick van Aanholt, Brighton & Hove Albion’s Joel Veltman and Liverpool’s Georginio Wijnaldum, as well as Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong.
Manchester United’s Donny van de Beek, however, withdraw from the initial 26-man squad with injury on June 8. Manager Frank de Boer elected not to call up a replacement. Their squad dropped to 24 after Luuk de Jong left the camp on June 23 due to a knee injury.
Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk is another notable absence after he ruled himself out of selection following his ACL rehabilitation.
Holland narrowly beat Ukraine 3-2 in their opening game. They also won their second group game 2-0 against Austria to confirm their place in the last 16. Their group game run ended on a high with a 3-0 win over North Macedonia to top Group C.
They will play the Czech Republic in the last 16 on Sunday, June 27.
Who is their key player?
The Dutch national team will be looking to scale the heights of Euro 88, their sole international tournament triumph. It won’t be easy without Van Dijk and having failed to qualify for the last two major tournaments.
De Jong will be one of the key men if the Dutch have any hopes of recreating the glory days of Marco van Basten and company.
De Jong was part of the Ajax team that reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2019 and got a dream move to Barcelona that summer. While it has not always been plain sailing at Camp Nou, the midfielder will be integral to his country’s chances of success in the Euros.
